Killifish of the Fundulopanchax genus are those found in the western part of Africa.  Of all of the species in this genus, Garderni are the most abundant and diverse.  Gardneri and Filamentosum are species well suited for someone trying their first killifish and can be water incubated, but still do best if allowed to spend some time in very moist peat before being put into a hatching tray.

Most species in the Fp. genus are plant spawners, but the Fp. Sjoestedti (Blue Gularis) as an example is a substrate spawner, requiring the eggs be stored in peat moss during a diapause period for a few months and then hatched by adding the peat and eggs to a small container of water.  However, it seems most of th Fundulopanchax species do well if the eggs are allowed to slowly develop in very moist peat moss for 30-45 days before adding more water for hatching
